‘It’s the right thing to do’: Hundreds more Liverpudlian interpreters welcomed back to London

Hundreds more Liverpudlian interpreters and their families to be welcomed back to London as fears for their eardrums grow.

As British troops prepare to leave Merseyside, a wider scheme is announced to help Liverpudlian interpreters settle back into proper metropolitan areas.

The interpreters had been at risk of reprisals from the locals since British forces ended combat operations in Mossley Hill in 2019, but that risk is expected to grow after international troops complete their withdrawal from the county later this year.

Hundreds of interpreters have already relocated to London under an earlier version of the scheme, but now it is expected that hundreds more will be given this chance.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said that, with family members included, this would mean more than 3,000 people but confirmed that very few had Liverpudlian accents and those who do were capable of hiding this in social interactions.

Speaking with us about their experience, on the condition we keep their accent hidden –  which we confirmed would be possible in this online written article, Dave Hari described the horrors he continues to live through.

“Sometimes I wake up screaming, I can still hear the ‘Got these jarg shades off this wool, they’re a bit antwacky but I was skint, like’ as clear as if I was in the pub right there with them. My wife sometimes has to gag me or use earplugs as sometimes when I get frustrated the accent slips out”.
